In Fish Looking at Grant Wormth's Painting: Baited Gothic, I reinterpret Grant Wood's American Gothic by adding absurdity and irony. Fish with human bodies gaze at a portrait where the characters' faces are replaced by earthworms, their natural food. Just as the fish consume art in which worms become their food, we consume art in which fish become ours. It creates a closed loop of consumption and interaction. The "Sugar" lollipop in the small fish's fin references Grant Wood himself, who loved sweets and often visited his dentist. In the original American Gothic, Wood painted his own dentist, adding another layer of irony and human indulgence. The work asks where the boundary lies between viewer and artwork: do we consume art, or does it consume us?
